There’s another kids series out from an LDS video publisher.

Are we finally getting a more wholesome alternative to Saturday morning cartoons?

As a parent you’ve suffered through an endless parade of stupid shows that somehow your children find entertaining. Howdy Town is a pretty silly show - talking ponies and all, but the Wiggle-weary parent will find it a welcome relief. Howdy Town manages to be entertaining to the kids, while not making the parent any dumber.

The show’s format retains interest well by switching from Howdy Town’s native ponies and cowboys, cartoon interludes, Cowboy Dan(?)’s anecdotes and educational pieces. This caters well to the 2-5 range, which is the group this program is best suited for.

In addition to variety, each episode (1 and 2 are available on the DVD) is packed with musical and visual entertainment. Lessons form the backbone of the simple plots, and add something of value to the fun. The live actors are energetic and the ponies are pretty much just that. The livestock aren’t quite Mr. Ed, but the kids won’t mind the loose lip-syncing (so do horses have lips?).

There are kids shows that can reasonably entertain both youth and adults, but this isn’t one of them. Howdy Town does not have any disembodied laughing babies or strange-shaped alien characters, so it will go easier on your nerves. But it isn’t all that entertaining for adults. The Howdy Town gang are there for the kids, and that’s why I’d recommend this for kids on the younger side, rather than those of us tainted my the cynicism of post-teenage life.

In an age where educational and wholesome favorites like Mr. Rogers are fading, Howdy Town is a safe bet. Your kids will like it, and you won’t have to worry about what your child is or isn’t learning.
