This man-on-the-street documentary represents a nation-wide effort to discover what America actually thinks of Mormons.

Daryn Tufts, of Single’s Ward fame teams up with cameraman Jed Knudsen for this grass-roots style film.

What do they find? Who are the lizard people and is it as funny as it looks? Read more to find out in my review.
Traveling to LA, DC, New Orleans and more, Daryn corners average folks to get an idea of what hey know about the Church. There are the classic Mormon misunderstandings, mistaken for Amish, Polygamy and Steve Martin. However, those familiar with the press coverage during the Olympics of 2002 won’t see many surprises.

Okay, there is the lizard-people guy. But for the most part there’s nothing shocking from the “Gentiles”. For those totally isolated from non-members, this might shed some light on the general public’s opinion of members of the Church, but for those of you who have lived outside the purest concentrations of the Church you wont be surprised.

To be fair, American Mormon is a funny show, the guys do have a lot of fun with the people the meet, and manage to keep things light. My only misgiving is from the expectation - given the subject matter - that it would be funnier.

There are parts of the short half-hour film that you’ll find unforgettable (and I won’t ruin them by including them here). Others are still haunting me, like the interview with the Amish gentleman in which the cameraman manages to include a direct shot of a horses backside.

For those interested in a light-hearted look at others’ attitudes towards the Mormon Church, you’ll be satisfied with this video. For those expecting a non-stop humor-fest you’ll be a little let down.
