If you need practical ideas on teaching your children independence, check out Merrilee Boyack’s new talk on CD: Teaching Your Children to Fly: A Guide to Independence.
Maybe you’ve been to Time Out for Women and seen Merrilee Boyack talk in person, or perhaps you’ve seen her books The Parenting Breakthrough and Strangling Your Husband is Not an Option. Teaching Your Children to Fly: A Guide to Independence is more of the same ‘ole Sister Boyack. She speaks about the things you can teach your children at the various stages in their lives, and how good it makes them feel to know how to do things for themselves. The ultimate goal? Self-sufficiency and a desire to move away from home!
I’m not particularly fond of Sister Boyack’s books. I’ve perused both of them and found them cheeky and pretty elementary in concept. I think hearing her speak made me even more put-off because she seems so … know-it-all, for lack of a better term. As she outlined the things a child should know at age 3, for instance, I found myself thinking, “Well, duh! What 3-year-old doesn’t know that?” I also seem to remember these very concepts introduced in The Parenting Breakthrough, so if you have that book, listening to this CD isn’t really necessary.
If you’re a parent looking for ideas on what concepts to teach your child, this talk on CD is for you. You can find Teaching Your Children to Fly: A Guide to Independence at Deseret Book stores or at www.DeseretBook.com.
