Come see what LDSReview thinks it the best Christmas album of the season!

This year, LDSReview made reviewing the top Christmas albums of the season a family affair. The votes are in, and this year our favorite album is…..

“Mary’s Lullaby: Christmas Songs for Bedtime”

It would seem like the obvious choice for a family with young children, but not counting my 3- and 2-year-old’s votes, my husband and I both gave this one 2 thumbs up. Perhaps the greatest disservice the producers of this album did was to label the album as “Christmas Songs for Bedtime” and put a sleeping baby on the cover. Yes, the songs are quiet and soothing, but this album isn’t just for babies. We thought it was awesome background music, and I especially loved it because of it’s single focus on Jesus Christ. It’s an absolutely beautiful album, which is why it’s our top pick.

Our second favorite was “Spirit of the Season” by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, featuring the Orchestra at Temple Square and Norwegian singer Sissel. You’ve most likely heard Sissel’s ethereal voice on the “Titanic” movie soundtrack (no, not singing “My Heart Will Go On” - that was Celine Dion). I don’t know any Norwegian, but I loved the song that Sissel sang in her native language (”Mitt Hjerte Alltid Vanker”). Another favorite of mine is “Like An Angel Passing Through My Room”, written by the male half of the Swedish singing group ABBA and performed by Sissel. It’s nice to hear classics like “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” and “Silent Night”, but the real perk of this album lies within the talents of Sissel.

Receiving honorable mention in our holiday music review is “O Holy Night” by Jenny Oaks Baker. If you love violin music, you’ll find that Jenny Oaks Baker is one of the best musicians out there. She has impressive credentials and she really shines on her albums. Songs on the album “O Holy Night” include “I Saw Three Ships”, “Ave Maria” and “Coventry Carol”, to name a few. This album didn’t receive our top honors only because we’re not huge violin fans, but it would be the perfect addition to a classical music collection.
