If you like word puzzles and you’re a Mormon, check out Variety Puzzles for Latter-day Saints - Volume 1.

I was really excited when authors Dell and Susan Hunt wanted LDSReview to look at their new magazine Variety Puzzles for Latter-day Saints - Volume 1. I’m the kind of girl who buys those silly little crossword books at the grocery store and fills them out to relax, so when I heard there was an LDS version, I was all over it.

I started out with the very first crossword puzzle in the book. Hmmm, not exactly what I had in mind when I thought about LDS crosswords. Not only were there ambiguous clues like, “Boy Scout badge” and “A Language taught at the MTC”, but there were really random, difficult clues like, “”And they did so at the going up to_______” 2 Kgs. 9:27″ and “King of Egypt 2 Chron 35:20″. I realized that with clues like these, I was never going to complete the puzzle unless I whipped out my Old Testament. It was a little discouraging, so I moved on to another crossword.

Much to my frustration, all of the crosswords are the same. It’s not much fun to do a “mindless” crossword when you have to look up the answers in your Bible. I was hoping because it’s an LDS magazine that there would be more references to modern-day prophets and quirky LDS things.

As far as the other puzzles go, I’m not really into things like “Quotation Drop In”, “Scrypto-Grams” and “Patch Work Quilt”. I’d never even seen puzzles like that before, and when I tried them out, I found out maybe I’m not as smart as I thought I was.

When it comes down to it, I think I’ll stick with my supermarket crosswords. Much easier because I don’t have to get out my Bible for reference.

If you think you’ll like Variety Puzzles for Latter-day Saints - Volume 1, you can find it at your nearest Deseret Book store or on the web at www.DeseretBook.com for the reasonable price of $4.95.
