Are you someone that loathes Valentine’s Day? If so, you’ll understand hardhearted Lily, who doesn’t believe in love, in The UnValentine by author Sam Beeson.
I’m not exactly sure how to classify The UnValentine. It falls somewhere in between a children’s story and a gift book, and it tells the simple, very short story of cynical Lily, a girl who hates Valentine’s Day. Her dismal attitude is changed on February 14th when a crumpled piece of paper lands on her desk and she finds that maybe love isn’t so sickening at all.
Perhaps the only saving grace of The UnValentine is the illustrations by artist Jesse Draper. The story is overly simple (think The Grinch but for Valentine’s Day instead of Christmas), and can be read in about 2 minutes. I didn’t particularly enjoy this book, and can’t imagine spending the list price of $12.95 on it.
If you are near a Deseret Book retailer, definitely read through the book before purchasing it to draw your own conclusions. The UnValentine can also be found on the web at www.DeseretBook.com.
