Mercedes Johnson has the perfect life. She lives on her childhood farm in rural Wyoming, has three good sons, and a loving husband - everything she could have ever dreamed of. But there’s a secret in her past that is about to be unearthed by the arrival of Dr. Brandon Rhodes. Will it tear her family apart, or will it make them stronger?
We first met Mercedes Johnson in Rachel Ann Nunes’s last novel,Flying Home (she was the sister of Austin Walker, Liana’s love interest). Mercedes hasn’t had a picture-perfect life. She grew up with an alcoholic father, but thanks to the love of her husband Wayne, her life is now nearly perfect. Still, she has been hiding a secret for the last 13 years - one that is about to be exposed with the surprise arrival of renowned heart surgeon Dr. Brandon Rhodes. Will this secret change their lives forever?
If you’ve read Rachel Ann Nunes’s novels, you’ll know that they tend to be a little far-fetched and a lot cheesy. Fields of Home starts out as a pretty believable situation: nice family on a farm living a good life. It’s even believable that Mercedes is in the situation that she’s in - lots of women have been in her position. But to have a love interest that’s a heart surgeon and to have that heart surgeon performing a key role in the ending of the book is what gets a little far-fetched. Still, the book wasn’t half bad. It had me wondering until the very end how the secret situation was going to be worked out, and having an element of surprise is always a good thing.
